SUMMARY:Extremal horizons as windows into new physics (Maciej Kolanowski\,
 University of Warsaw)
DESCRIPTION:I will start by reviewing a few recent results regarding (nearl
y-)extremal black holes that come from the non-LQG community. Having done
that I'll show that in the presence of higher curvature terms in the actio
n\, asymptotically flat extremal rotating black holes have curvature singu
larities on their horizon. Furthermore\, near-extremal black holes can hav
e arbitrarily large tidal forces for infalling observers.
