I will start by reviewing a few recent results regarding (nearly-)extremal black holes that come from the non-LQG community. Having done that I’ll show that in the presence of higher curvature terms in the action, asymptotically flat extremal rotating black holes have curvature singularities on their horizon. Furthermore, near-extremal black holes can have arbitrarily large tidal forces for infalling observers.
