Basic Information

Second Erlangen Fall School on Quantum Geometry

When?

Monday, October 07 to Friday, October 11 2013

Description

In 2011, the FAU Erlangen-Nuernberg initiated the Emerging Field Programme that supports research fields which have demonstrated a promising development but are just beginning to establish themselves in the scientific landscape. One of these “emerging fields” is “Quantum Geometry”. In this Emerging Field Project, the expertise of both mathematicians and physicists are brought together in order to make progress in our understanding of Quantum Gravity. From the physics perspective, the task of combining the principles of General Relativity with those of Quantum Theory is one of the most important research problems in foundational physics. This requires novel mathematical input since the standard techniques of Quantum Field Theory fail in the case of the gravitational interaction. From the mathematical perspective, the new mathematical structures that arise in this effort may trigger progress in various mathematical disciplines such as infinite dimensional geometry, representation theory and related areas of Mathematical Physics. The interaction between mathematicians and physicists is therefore quite natural in this research field but but it poses a challenge due to the different backgrounds that these two research communities have. It is therefore the aim of this school to introduce the concepts and techniques of the respective research programme in a “bilingual” form from which both mathematicians and physicists can profit and can start interacting with each other.

The school covers the following topics:

  • Causal Dynamical Triangulations
  • Conformal Quantum Field Theory
  • Representation Theory of Lie Groups
  • Hopf Algebras, Tensor Categories and Topological Field Theories

Conference Venue

Conference Venue

The school takes place at the Department of Physics, University of Erlangen-Nünberg, Staudstr. 7, 91058 Erlangen. The Physics Department is located on the South Campus and can be reached from Erlangen Central Station by bus.

At the bus stop (directly in front of the train station) take the Bus 287, in the direction “Erlangen Sebaldussiedlung” or the Bus 293 in the direction “Bruck/Eichendorffschule”. The bus takes about 20 minutes. Get off at the bus stop “Sebaldussiedlung”

The bus stop is just in front of the Biology and Physics Departments in the Erwin-Rommel-Straße . From here you need only about 5 minutes to reach the conference venue.

Travel Directions to Erlangen

By train

The school venue (Department of Physics, Staudstr. 7, 91058 Erlangen) is located about 3,5 km away from Erlangen Central train station (Erlangen Hauptbahnhof). The train station is served by high speed trains (ICE,IC) from all major German cities. Train schedules and connections can be found on the train schedule site of Deutsche Bahn, which also allows one to make reservations and book tickets.

By plane via Nuremberg airport

The closest international airport is Nuremberg airport, which is located about 20 km from Erlangen in the city of Nuremberg and has flights to many destinations in Europe and overseas. From the airport, you can take the underground line U2 to Nuremberg Central Station, which takes about 12 minutes. From Nuremberg Central station, there are frequent regional trains to Erlangen Central Station, which take about 15 to 25 minutes. Another option is to take a taxi. A taxi from Nuremberg airport or Nuremberg Central Station to Erlangen costs about 25 to 30 euros.

Regional trains between Nurnberg and Erlangen can be used with a regional ticket that is valid also in the underground. You can buy this ticket directly from the ticket machines in the underground station at the airport by selecting “Erlangen Hbf” as destination. Information about different types of tickets and fares can be found on the website of the local transport company VGN. For the schedules of the regional trains between Nuremberg and Erlangen, see the VGN connection site or the train schedule site of Deutsche Bahn .

By plane via Munich airport or Frankfurt airport

If there are no good connections from your departure airport to Nuremberg airport, another option is to fly to Munich airport or Frankfurt airport and take a train to Erlangen from there. The train travel times are about 2 h and 30 minutes from Munich airport and about 2 to 3 hours from Frankfurt airport.

From Frankfurt airport there are direct trains to Erlangen as well as trains which require a change in Nuremberg. From Munich airport, one first takes a regional train (S-Bahn) to Munich Central Station (München Hbf), which takes 40 to 45 minutes and runs every 15 minutes. From Munich Central Station to Erlangen Central Station, there are direct trains (2 hours) and trains with a change in Nuremberg (approximately 1 hour and a half). For train schedules and connections, see the train schedule site of Deutsche Bahn.
